What We Say When We’re not Speaking

Did you know that 90% of human communication is non-verbal? Our bodies say so much about us- our clothes, styles, expressions and gestures often communicate a lot more than what we are aware of. As teachers and leaders, we often spend time thinking about “what” to say. We should pay the same attention to the way we look, our expressions and our posture.
Stand in front of a mirror and then pretend you are talking to a student. Even better, ask someone to take a video of you talking to a child or a student. Then think about the details- what would it look like to someone who doesn’t know you or the child. What would they think about you, and your relationship with the child? What are the various ways you are communicating with the child? Are all the messages consistent with your professional goals?
Telling students to present neat work when if we are unkempt, gives a conflicting message. Encouraging words without a smile are not as effective.
It’s not just students- think about teachers, parents and other people with who you communicate. With a focus on posture, tone of voice and physical expressions we can communicate positive messages that accentuate our goals.
How do you ensure that your verbal and non-verbal communication are consistent and represent your best?
