Addressing Teachers

Mrs. Paxton? Ellen? Miss Ellen? Deciding what students should call us can be a dilemma. Yet, it’s certainly possible to have both the students’ respect and to come across as approachable.
As we model respectful behaviors, we must also comply with the practices in our community and demonstrate a sensitivity to how others like to be addressed. For example, while one person may not like being called by their first name, another may prefer to be called by their first name. It’s also interesting to understand how people approach this issue in different ways. Furthermore, what is acceptable practice in one culture, may be disrespectful in another.
In my experience it’s best to ask people how they would like to be addressed. Just being asked, helps them feel important, special and respected. This can set the foundation for a successful relationship and be a good practice when we interact with others in our lives.
Hey Teacher?! How do you like to be addressed and why?
