"Amanuensis, anyone?"

Check Out the New Blog Recently, the head of the training department in a federal agency entered my classroom and observed for the whole day. Afterwards, she handed me a list of things she had observed and liked.

OBSERVATION COMMENT: “You avoid using big words, unless you want to teach their meanings.”

MY THOUGHTS: I believe in the value of an extended, extensive vocabulary. Sometimes, if I need a note-taker, I’ll ask for a volunteer “amanuensis,” and will point out the “manu” root word. Then, I’ll use the word throughout the day. To illustrate, “Will the amanuensis be sure to make note of these ideas?”
