Cellphones and Cheating

Check Out the New Blog 25% of students didn’t think that using their cellphone to get answers during a test was “cheating.” I was surprised when I read this in an infographic recently.

Are we not communicating responsible use of technology to students? With innovations in technology, we need to think about how these devices can be used in a myriad of ways.

Cell phones are becoming more and more common and it is increasingly difficult to confiscate or eliminate them from the classroom. In fact, there are so many ways we can constructively use cellphones in the classroom. So I wonder… is this really happening? Are students using cellphones for cheating, without being noticed?

It may be time to introduce new practices when it comes to cellphones and tests. Maybe all students who have cellphones must be asked to place them in a box before a test. Teachers may need to keep a look out for hidden headphones and such.

Have you encountered cell phone cheating in your classroom? What are your experiences and ideas regarding cell phones in the classroom?

As a substitute teacher, I find it extremely difficult to enforce the no cell phones or other electronics rules.
This is due to the fact that classroom teachers enforce the rules inconsistently.
I believe that students would do well to learn that silence is not to be feared or avoided. They can gain much from allowing themselves to connect with their inner thoughts and feelings without constant distraction.
