College and Career Readiness

Do you know what each of your students wants to do in the long-term? Asking them about this is a great exercise in getting to know every student and discovering what they would like to “be when they grow up” and why. Then, encourage students to collect information about what they want to do and develop grounded and realistic expectations.
As a new batch of students get ready to graduate this year, I wonder if they all know what they want to do when they finish school. Are we as teachers, parents and other adults encouraging them to think through every aspect of achieving their dreams? Talking about the future is important as we help students learn the skills they need to get there.
Helping students learn about various professions and career choices introduces them to a world of opportunity. There are numerous ways to do this including virtual field trips, guest speakers, internships, job shadowing, mentoring, Skype interviews and more.
