We all know the brain plays a major role in learning, but few are aware of how. In a class where each child differs in ability to learn, it is essential that educators know how the brain is related to the process of learning, in order to help facilitate student performance. Such knowledge will also give the educator an advantage when faced with the challenge of teaching a child with special needs.

This two part integrated course equips educators with extensive knowledge about the process of learning. SECTION A, Cognitive Skills: Understanding Learning Challenges focuses on the skills involved in learning and introduces you to various techniques and strategies of identifying a child with learning difficulties and overcoming challenges. It also provides tips on how to make learning fun, challenging and different. SECTION B, Accommodating All Learners helps educators understand more about various learning styles, and how these impact the way a student learns. Gain knowledge about specific teaching approaches that can be used to reach and teach each learning style.

Objectives & Outcomes:

As a result of successful participation in SECTION A, Cognitive Skills: Understanding Learning Challenges, students should be able to:

  • Understand the need for development of cognitive skills.
  • Describe the structure of the brain, neuroplasticity and how we learn.
  • Understand the limitations of IQ testing.
  • Test for various specific cognitive skills in students, and identify areas of deficit.
  • Apply learning theories while teaching students.
  • Identify a student’s learning style.
  • Customize teaching based on a student’s learning style.
  • Train students with deficits in specific cognitive skills.
  • Modify training of cognitive skills as a student progresses.
  • Apply reading and comprehension strategies in the classroom.
  • Understand the basics of ADHD, Dyslexia, Traumatic Brain Injury, ODD, PDD and the cognitive implications of these conditions.

As a result of successful participation in SECTION B, Accommodating All Learners, students should be able to:

  • Reflect upon changes in teaching and learning.
  • Engage in activities that illuminate and stimulate brain functions.
  • Recognize learning styles.
  • Practice using the language of teaching and learning.
  • Identify as both teacher and learner.
  • Consider and examine their own personal learning styles
  • Recognize connections between characteristics and learning tools.
  • Examine characteristics of student learners.
  • Demonstrate understanding of a systemic, practical model to accommodate all learners.
  • Recognize how their own learning style impacts their teaching style.
  • Examine teaching and learning strategies to accommodate all learners with whom they work.
  • Consider how online learning activities might accommodate the needs of student-learners.
  • Extrapolate commonalities between theories and strategies.
  • Develop a plan to put teaching and learning changes into practice.

I see I have to spend 5 hours discussing/practicing, but I'm a substitute teacher, so I don't really have colleagues to discuss with. Apart from peer discussion boards, which you don't have, I have no way to attain these five hours. Rocatta T.

While some of the modules were very comprehensive and through in explaining (lesson 5,6), other modules seemed to have lots of information that didn't have a clear connection to the other content and was so general that it wasn't useful (lesson 1,3). However, the interactive features and articles/links were very interesting and useful. Jennifer M.

I definitely like the flexibility of the online courses. I was very busy the first quarter of school and tried to finish the course but other urgent matters interfered. It was great to have the course available when I had the time to finish! (Please note: there was more reviewing due to the time interval but that actually was good for me.) Jill K.
