Course Description:

The implementation of Common Core State Standards across the curriculum provides a real-world approach to learning and teaching. It is increasingly essential for educators to develop students who not only are critical thinkers but innovators as well. This course helps teachers to build up such students.

Section A, Standard-Based Instruction through STEM, brings together four major disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics into one cohesive system. This section includes the benefits and opportunities associated with this new education paradigm and guides teachers to customize classroom instruction so that students develop the skills they need to survive in today’s knowledge-based world.

Section B, Common Core Mathematics, focuses on the Common Core Standards for Mathematics and how educators can apply those mathematical principles to everyday life. This section contains ideas, tools, and activities that teachers can use to make math interesting and fun for their students.

Section C, Common Core Curriculum-Based Measures (CBM), helps teachers evaluate and monitor basic academic skills based on Common Core principles. This section contains step-by-step guidelines and examples on how teachers can use CBM tools to assess various academic areas such as letter knowledge and fluency, early math and computation fluency, and more. By completing this course teachers gain the needed confidence to implement common state standards across the curriculum.

Self-paced Professional Development Credit classes incorporate online content, quizzes, interactivities and a Course Action Plan you can put to use in your work environment. Learning takes place asynchronously, at your convenience, and may be completed over a period of 4 weeks. Note, teachers looking for graduate credits, please check with your issuing authority about whether it will accept these online teacher courses.

Objectives & Outcomes:

As a result of successful participation in SECTION A, Standard-Based Instruction through STEM students should be able to:

  • Understand the meaning of STEM.
  • Recognize the need for STEM in today’s generation.
  • Understand the different approaches of integrating STEM in the classroom.
  • Apply the STEM models in the classroom.
  • Recognize the characteristics of STEM students and teachers.
  • Integrate STEM across the curriculum.
  • Identify the curriculum and materials needed for STEM integration.
  • Design STEM curriculum and instruction for elementary, middle, and high school classrooms.
  • Align instruction with Common Core State Standards.
  • Understand and apply common classroom assessments.
  • Understand the benefits, challenges, and opportunities of STEM integration.

As a result of successful participation in SECTION B, Common Core Mathematics students should be able to:

  • Understand the truth about Math.
  • Recognize various math myths prevent today.
  • Understanding and applying the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
  • Make math fun and interesting in the classroom.
  • Utilize various practices and tools to develop ‘mathematically confident’ students.
  • Apply different theories to motivate students towards studying math.
Recognize your students’ individual learning styles and customize instruction accordingly.
  • Set up the classroom that encourages students to apply Common Core principles in the classroom and the real-world.
  • Encourage students to ask questions.
  • Assess students.
  • Modify the physical classroom setting to promote math learning.

As a result of successful participation in SECTION C, Common Core Curriculum-Based Measures (CBM) students should be able to:

  • Understand the benefits of using Curriculum-Based Measures (CBM) to monitor student growth in various academic areas.
  • Understand the types of CBM probes.
  • Use CBM to identify learning disabilities.
  • Use specific CBM tools to measure letter knowledge, oral reading fluency, and reading comprehension.
  • Use specific CBM tools to measures early math and computation fluency.
  • Track student growth in written expression and spelling using CBM tools.
  • Utilize the CBM probes for testing only and not teaching.
  • Use the results obtained to plan academic interventions and increase student achievement.

This course helped to enrich my understanding of meaningful classroom activities that address the eight standards for mathematical practice. I will continue to reassess my own teaching lessons, activities, and strategies to deepen the understanding and application of mathematical concepts of my students.

This was a very good course for me. I learned a lot that I did not know because I have very limited STEM experience. These are excellent modules for professional development and renewing a license. Thank you.

This course opened my eyes to the importance of making sure math is not just a repetition of practicing problems but making sure it is relevant to the children's lives. Making math practical and relevant will change any negative stigmas children have about math.
