Personal Best

Check Out the New Blog Personal bestIn the weekly team meetings that we have at Professional Learning Board, we start each meeting with a “segue.” This is a time when each person on the team takes a minute to share about their business best and personal best of the week. Over the weeks, I have realized that this extra 2-5 minutes taken at each meeting has helped us as a team to bond, to grow together and to understand each other’s life situations.

I’ve been thinking about how useful this strategy is and how it could be effectively applied across multiple scenarios where groups of people meet or work together. For example, the classroom. What if every student was given an opportunity to take a minute to share something that happened over the last week or a perhaps their personal best? It might take a few minutes once a week, but just think about the potential benefits. Students could start to learn and understand more about one another, and as the teacher, you’d not only be building community but also strengthening connections with your students. Giving this activity a try can also help students develop fluency in speaking, confidence in talking to a group, and teaches them to reflect in a very concrete, yet simple way.

Taking this thought further, what about giving students an opportunity to share how they applied something that they learned in their every day life. What a wonderful way to connect learning to daily life, and help students see how their learning impacts their out of school activities. Providing regular opportunities like these establish and maintain a climate of learning and growing throughout the school year.

What was your personal best this past week?
