Preserving Memories

There was a time when an album was the ultimate way to capture memories. Few pictures were taken, and all of them carefully put into albums that would be looked at many, if not hundreds or thousands of times.
With the evolution of technology, digital cameras, videos, blogs and social networking, this process has become a lot more complicated. Between the thousands of Facebook status updates, photos and videos it gets a lot more difficult to look back and find what was really special.
Are memory boxes still relevant? How can we put these things into scrapbooks? This week I encourage you to brainstorm with me. Can we come up with creative ideas that will help us remember and record the highlights of our life. So that as we age and want to share something about our life with our grandchildren (and great-grandchildren), we will know where to start!
What are some creative ways to preserve our most important memories?
I, like everyone else, post pictures to Facebook. There are “events” that I want to preserve – trips that I take, pictures of “engaged” children in my class, birthdays, graduations, weddings, etc. I save those pictures and make a book with the program Aperture, more customized than Shutterfly, Snapfish… These books, and there are now many, are on my coffee table. My children can always be found looking through the books recapturing their memories.
As for the children in my class, I have a blog, and I post slideshows and videos to the blog weekly, along with the student work and words that describe the sets of pictures, to help parents feel as if they are a “fly on the wall,” watching their children engage in meaningful learning tasks. Parents can download any pictures to preserve their children’s learning and growth throughout the school year. I pay for the website, so I get to keep the years recorded.
