Real World Projects

Just read about a class where students are clamoring to enroll. Student teams in the classroom are designing, building and creating all sorts of stuff. Follow this up with incredible authentic assessment where students present and “sell” a client on the finished product. And, they are doing it both, on time and within budget.
What types of things are they developing? Seems everything from doll furniture and prosthetic legs to zoo hospitals.
At the core of this fun and super engaging class are teachers integrating academic subjects in real-world projects answering the often heard student question “When will I ever use this in my life?” While this is a STEM course, I can imagine similar project-based courses working in these ways as well: students building a web site for a community event, working with local businesses on real-world problems, helping a local food shelf create fundraising marketing materials, etc.
What “real world” projects do you do with students in your classroom or could you envision students doing in your subject area?
