School Uniforms and Learning Outcomes

Recent research by Michael L. Slepian of Columbia University showed that people wearing formal clothing have higher scores on a scalethat measures abstract thinking, than people wearing casual clothes. The difference in the scores is enough to make a person think twice before getting dressed in the morning. What’s been a hunch before such as wearing that ‘lucky sweater’ could really impact attitude, thinking or even performance.
In the field of education, school uniforms are a constant debate. While some teachers will say that uniforms for students are essential (and what about for teachers?), others will argue that school uniforms are not needed at all.
This study results do reflect what can be observed in the world of work. Successful executives, leaders and administrators are often dressed in more formal and professional attire at work.
What are your thoughts? Will teaching children to dress neatly and formally help them grow to be better students or great leaders?
