Setting effective classroom rules
Every classroom needs rules. Rules are the cornerstone of a well-managed class and setting these rules requires thought and planning by the teacher. Behavioral rules should be relevant, meaningful and deter students from misbehaving in the classroom.
The primary reason for setting classroom rules is to eliminate and avoid all distractions and possible misconduct that interferes with learning. The aim is to create a positive and conducive atmosphere for learning, and to do so classroom management is essential.
Criteria for effective rules
Rules are only effective when students value and follow them. Setting effective rules can be made easy by adhering to the following 5 traits:
- Simplicity: Wording of rules should be simple, clear and easy for students to understand and follow.
- Isolate: In general, classroom rules encompass the behavioral expectations from students and need to be kept separate from other sets of rules.
- Clarity: Avoid setting vague rules that can be confusing. These may be taken advantage of or misunderstood by students.
- Applicable: Adhering to rules is easier when students understand the real life examples of the good and bad behaviors. It is best not to set rules that are ambiguous.
- Importance: Emphasize the importance and need of the rules in the classroom and display them where students can clearly see them at all times.
More tips to making effective classroom rules:
- Word rules positively, not using too many ‘don’ts’ to encourage to students to adhere to them.
- Make it a class activity by getting input and suggestions from students while setting rules. This can encourage them to be accountable and responsible.
- Give prompt consequences. When rules are broken, it is important to render consequences immediately.
Most importantly have fun! Learning should be fun and engaging, not a negative experience for students. Rules are meant to encourage students to learn to the best of their ability.
