Super Bowl in the Curriculum

Well, it’s hard to miss all of the excitement and media attention focused on the Super Bowl. Whether you’re a Green Bay Packers fan or are rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers, whether you only watch to see the commercials or you could care less and will not be watching the game, it’s hard to dismiss that the Super Bowl has become an important part of the U.S. culture and economy.
That got me thinking about how big an event the Super Bowl has become in the U.S. and wondering how teachers might be integrating what seems to be an unofficial U.S. holiday into their curriculum.
Do you integrate the Super Bowl into your curriculum?
If so, how do you bring the Super Bowl into your classroom? Please share your subject area and grade level(s) as well.
Who’s my pick to win? Sorry, I have no favorite as my team was out of the running months ago.
I love this time of year. There is so much you can have the students do depending on how much time you have between MLK and Black History month. You can be as creative as you want and maybe the kids have new ideas to add.
I usually start one week before the event. The project is cross curricular to math, science, languages arts and history. The main objective is for students to gain experience in real-life skills and have fun.
Objective: SWBAT plan a trip and research using the Internet (or other materials) and present their findings in the form of a brochure or digital format.
Anticipatory Set 1: scavenger hunt
Anticipatory Set 2: Give each student $3500 and tell them they are going to the Superbowl. Ask them how they will spend the money (for one person) and write down their answers in a journal or notebook.
Activities:
SW work in pairs or independently and guesstimate the costs for flights, hotel and food.
SW research arrangements for flight, hotel and dining using sites such as: priceline, travelocity, kayak, orbit, etc.
SW explore other attractions and travel concerns such as: landmarks, sightseeing, culture, laws and geographics
SW calculate expenses and create a budget
SW create an itinerary using a spreadsheet or table
SW present their findings in the form of a brochure, or other digital format (slide show, e-book, Glogster, the list is endless)
SW present oral presentation
EXTRA
SW calculate the odds of which team will win based on past records.
HAVE FUN AND HOPE YOUR TEAM WINS!
