Computer security is really about keeping data secure; and to secure the information stored on a school district’s computers you need to determine what data needs to be secured. The answer to this question may vary from district to district or state to state, but some constants include:
- Student Data
- IEP Data (Special Education Plans)
- Grades
- Census Data
- Bus Schedules
- Locker Combinations
- Employee Data
- Payroll Information
- Census Data
- Reviews and Other HR Documents
- Tests
- Email Files
- Completed Student Work Submitted for Grading (prevent copying)
- Graded Student Work
This list is not complete, but provides a general idea of the types of information that need to be secured in a school setting and education environment. It is recommended that you consult with your IT and legal departments for a complete list pertaining to your particular district.
