{"id":1933,"date":"2011-06-22T06:00:35","date_gmt":"2011-06-22T11:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/tlb\/?p=1933"},"modified":"2019-03-27T14:28:59","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T19:28:59","slug":"classroom-behavior-root-causes-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/tlb\/classroom-behavior-root-causes-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Classroom Behavior: Root Causes &#038; Drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/professionallearningboard.com\/blog\/\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"check_out_the_new_blog\" title=\"Check Out the New Blog\" alt=\"Check Out the New Blog\"  src=\"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/images\/check_out_the_new_blog.jpg\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<div id=\"Obj20\">\n<p><span>A student\u2019s behavior is not random but is determined by one or more <span style=\"color: #cc9900;\">root causes or behavioral drivers<\/span>, the most common of which include:<strong><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Social attention (adult or peer)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A student may call out sarcastic comments in class because she gets peer attention for doing so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Escape or avoidance of tasks, settings, or situations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A student who is a poor reader may become defiant toward the teacher whenever she is asked to read aloud in front of the class. When sent to the principal\u2019s office, the student has successfully avoided the situation or activity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Access to <span style=\"color: #cc9900;\">tangibles or rewards or privileges (\u2018pay-offs\u2019)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When  misbehavior is rewarded by access to a preferred object a young student  may engage in physical tantrums until allowed to play with a particular  toy.<\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><em>Similar<\/em> misbehavior often stems from <em>different<\/em> root causes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Two students in the same situation may both refuse to comply with a teacher\u2019s request and be sent to the principal\u2019s office.
