The ABC Timeline refers to\u00a0behavior elements\u00a0arranged in a time  sequential fashion:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul><span><span><span><span><span><span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<li>\n<div><strong>A<\/strong>ntecedent<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><strong>B<\/strong>ehavior<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><strong>C<\/strong>onsequence<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/ul>\n<p><strong><span><span><span><span><span><span><span style=\"color: #cc9900;\">Antecedent<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span><span><span><span><span><span><span style=\"color: #cc9900;\">:<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span>One or more <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span><strong>environmental<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span>factors or events that appear to trigger student behavior. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Altering the antecedent may prevent the behavior or make the behavior more likely to occur.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>An  instructor noted that one of her 3rd-grade  students would act out  every time he was asked to read in front of a  group. She realized that  the student was a poor reader and acted out to  \u2018escape\u2019 having to read  publicly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span><span><span><span><span><span><span style=\"color: #cc9900;\">Behavior<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span><span><span><span><span><span><span style=\"color: #cc9900;\">: <\/span><br \/>\nActual child\u2019s behavior (e.g., reading, fighting).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The instructor\u00a0changed\u00a0the student&#8217;s\u00a0reading program (the <strong>antecedent<\/strong>)   by removing the student from the reading group and pairing him with a   peer tutor from a higher grade level. The student liked working with  the  peer tutor and stopped acting out to escape reading.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span><span><span><span><span><span><span style=\"color: #cc9900;\">Consequence<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span><span><span><span><span><span><span style=\"color: #cc9900;\">:<\/span><br \/>\nThe  outcome or consequence of the student behavior that increases or  decreases the probability that the behavior will occur again under  similar conditions. Changing the consequence will change the probability  that the behavior will reoccur.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Improved performance for this student and a better managed classroom create a conducive\u00a0learning enviroment for\u00a0everyone.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>It  is much better to head off problem behaviors proactively than to have  to deal with the fallout after &#8216;trouble&#8217; behaviors have occurred.
