A technique founded by the late Greek philosopher Socrates, Socratic Questioning is method of using Reflective Questions to draw answers from students.<\/p>\n

Purpose of Socratic Questioning: <\/strong><\/p>\n

The primary purpose of Socratic Questioning is to channel and refine student thought processes to challenge their accuracy and help them achieve their ultimate goal – to improve their understanding of the topic.<\/p>\n

Types of Socratic Questioning:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The following are the 6 types of Socratic Questions that are used to stimulate and challenge thinking:<\/p>\n

Conceptual Clarification Questions<\/strong><\/td>\nThese are questions that encourage students to reflect upon and critique the material in depth. This brings clarity to the thought process and enables students to form impressions and rationale with evidence.<\/td>\n\u201cWhy do you say that?\u201d
\n\u201cDid you mean it like this?\u201d
\n\u201cCan you give an example?\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Probing Assumptions<\/strong><\/td>\nThese questions make students critique and reflect on their own assumptions or beliefs on which they are basing their understanding.<\/td>\n <\/p>\n

\u201cHow did you come to that assumption?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy do you choose to believe or assume that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think that the assumption could be wrong?\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Probing Rationale, Reasons and Evidences<\/strong><\/td>\nThese questions help students to strengthen their arguments through deeper research into the material.<\/td>\n <\/p>\n

\u201cAre there any other pieces of evidence to support this claim?\u201d<\/p>\n
