{"id":2519,"date":"2011-05-18T06:00:41","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T11:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/tlb\/?p=2519"},"modified":"2019-03-27T14:29:05","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T19:29:05","slug":"what-is-child-neglect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/tlb\/what-is-child-neglect\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Child Neglect?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/professionallearningboard.com\/blog\/\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"check_out_the_new_blog\" title=\"Check Out the New Blog\" alt=\"Check Out the New Blog\"  src=\"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/images\/check_out_the_new_blog.jpg\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><a title=\"What is child neglect?\" href=\"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/tlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/define_neglect.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2522\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"define_neglect\" src=\"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/tlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/define_neglect.jpg\" alt=\"What is Neglect?\" width=\"195\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><strong>While physical abuse tends to  happen in specific instances or events, neglect tends to be more  on-going<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Neglect often leaves no visible  scars and therefore is more likely than physical abuse to go undetected. <span style=\"font-size: small;\">Furthermore, children may grow up believing that their  circumstances are a normal way of life and therefore not seek assistance or  confide information to anyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Neglect is the failure to give proper care or attention to a child across  these areas:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\">\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Physical &#8211; Failure to  provide needed food, shelter or protection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Medical<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Failure to provide necessary medical services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Educational<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Failure to educate a child.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Emotional<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Inattention to a child&#8217;s emotional or psychological  needs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Neglect involves the caregiver&#8217;s inattention to the  basic needs of a child, such as food, clothing, shelter, medical care and  supervision.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Living in poverty, in and of itself, does not mean  that a child is being neglected. And, neglectful circumstances do  not always mean a child is neglected.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Keep in mind that accepted standards of care and a  community&#8217;s culture may be contributing factors to neglect while indicating a  need for information and\/or assistance. If a family ignores or fails to use  information and resources, and a child&#8217;s health or safety is at risk, then child  welfare intervention may be required.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>A child who shows the following signs, may be a victim of neglect<\/strong>:<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Consistently dirty, unwashed and\/or hungry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Insufficiently dressed for the weather.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Needing medical care<strong> <\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Improper dental care, loose teeth or infected gums.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Begging or stealing food or money.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Frequent absences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Losing or failure to gain weight.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Note that these individual signs of neglect may not be a reason  for concern.
