It was<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> found that what is done before reading, is very beneficial for understanding the text. This preparation work is what helps students get connect the new information to what they already know.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This new format suggests that 50-60% of the lesson should be spent on pre- reading activities (the base or the largest part of the triangle).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">These activities are often fun for both the teacher and student<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sample pre-reading activities may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Discussing new vocabulary and trying to attach it to something students already know.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Asking students what they know about the topic and from where that information came. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Looking at the subtitles and asking students to consider anything they know about them. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Examining the pictures and captions to learn more about what the text is going to say. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Checking the graphs and maps to discover how they might add meaning to the text. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Looking at the bold words.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Analyzing who wrote the text and the audience for whom it was originally written. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Reading the entire first paragraph and asking students what they know about the text.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Reading the last paragraph and asking students what they know about the text. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Reading the first sentence or first two lines in each paragraph and asking students what they now know about the text. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Asking students to write a question that they anticipate will be answered in the text.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What are some pre-reading activities that you use in your classroom?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>From Professional Learning Board\u2019s online continuing education course for teachers: <\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/tlb\/reading-across-the-curriculum-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reading Across the Curriculum<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>  Recent research brought to light a new lesson format that gave due importance to pre-reading activities.
