{"id":3973,"date":"2011-11-25T21:01:30","date_gmt":"2011-11-26T03:01:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/tlb\/?p=3973"},"modified":"2019-03-27T14:27:41","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T19:27:41","slug":"teaching-comprehension-strategies-for-middle-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/tlb\/teaching-comprehension-strategies-for-middle-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Comprehension Strategies for middle school"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/professionallearningboard.com\/blog\/\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"check_out_the_new_blog\" title=\"Check Out the New Blog\" alt=\"Check Out the New Blog\"  src=\"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/images\/check_out_the_new_blog.jpg\"><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/tlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/comprehension.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3974\" style=\"border-width: 4px; border-color: black; border-style: solid; margin: 10px;\" title=\"Teacher and Student In A Classroom At School\" src=\"https:\/\/k12teacherstaffdevelopment.com\/tlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/comprehension.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Comprehension is a complex process and includes the ability to comprehend, discuss, study, and write about multiple forms of text.\u00a0Teachers can help their students become proficient readers with the help of effective teaching comprehension strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the National Reading Panel (NRP) in an evidence based assessment of an experimental and quasi-experimental research on reading in 2000 concluded that there are seven types of teaching comprehension strategies that meet their criteria for effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>The panel\u2019s findings, based primarily on research conducted among students in grades 3-8, suggest that\u00a0the following strategies are effective in teaching comprehension in the middle grades, and possibly even in higher grades.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Comprehension monitoring<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This strategy involves knowing when the student\u2019s understanding breaks down and which \u201cfix-up\u201d strategies to apply (for example, rereading, reasoning the matter through and using cues from the sentence\/paragraph\u2019s organizational structure).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cooperative learning<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Encouraging students toEngage with peers in problem-solving activities or to share ideas through peer-led discussions is another effective strategy.<\/li>\n<li>Using\u00a0<strong>graphic and semantic organizers<\/strong>\u00a0(including story maps)providing the students with visual aids to understand the content better.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Answering questions<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Generating questions<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Teaching students to ask questions in order to understand various aspects of a text.<\/li>\n<li>Understanding\u00a0<strong>text structure\u00a0<\/strong>helps to develop an awareness of how a writer organizes information to assist readers in recalling the content of a selection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Summarizing<\/strong>helps recap what has just been read, thus increasing comprehension.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>What comprehension strategies have you used in your classroom?
