What are Performance based Assessments?

Performance assessments, more commonly known as authentic assessments, require students to be able to apply what they have learned instead of just recalling information like most multiple-choice assessments.
Performance based assessments allow the student to demonstrate mastery and enable the teacher to better understand student mastery. The reason for this is because the student has to know the information throughly in order to “perform” or “create” a product.
When using these assessments, the teacher should provide students a rubric – outlining the assessment requirements. For a student to demonstrate mastery on a performance assessment, the student MUST be able to show understanding, not the ability to guess the right answer.

- Oral Presentations
- Powerpoint Presentations
- Projects
- Experiments
- Debates
- iMovies
- Performances
- Portfolios of student work over time
