Famous Words

Check Out the New Blog FamousWordsI was recently reading an article about how so many words we use are derived from famous people. Did you know that “leotard” was actually the name of a French acrobat?

I often find that when I speak, there are some words that I tend to use more often than others. This phenomenon also happens for people when they write. When word reliance is frequent or unnecessary, it can become a barrier to communication. While we may be completely unaware of our own repetitive word use, others around us notice. In some cases, it’s distracting while at the other end of the spectrum it could be something people chuckle about. Of course, there are also times, when these extra words add confusion to our sentences, making it difficult to understand.

As teachers, it is very important for us to grow in our verbal communication and our writing. Perhaps there is an unnecessary word that you are reliant upon. Think about it, and catch yourself the next time.

Are you ‘famous’ for always using a certain word or phrase?
