Making Accommodations

Check Out the New Blog accommodatingWe talk and learn a lot about accommodating students in the classroom. We make lesson plans that allow for every student to participate and sometimes even talk to school administration about support with accommodations. However, when look outside of the classroom and into our own interactions it can sometimes be more difficult to recognize or make these types of accommodations. Think of the neighbor who has acute knee pain, or a single mom with three children. How might we go out of the way to enable them to better manage their activities? Maybe it’s offering a ride or helping with babysitting.

It’s always a little easier to make accommodations when it’s a part of our job as we’re accountable to someone else. It can be a little more of a challenge when these efforts are reliant upon only our own intent. I encourage you to look around you and consider ways in which you might help or support someone.

What are some ways in which you reach out to make accommodations either within or outside of the classroom?
