Tools for Education: MMORPG

According to Wikipedia, MMORPG is the acronym for “Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.” In an MMORPG, thousands of players exist in the same game world at the same time. Most players begin by playing individually.
The game trains players and builds them up with competencies that are marked with tokens or skill categories – in other words, the higher your achievement in a category or number of tokens, the greater your power and the more you can unlock and experience the game!
This is the same sort of great feedback and interaction system that I witnessed being used by many wonderful teachers in their classrooms. Motivation and engagement may be strongly linked to the projected outcomes and expectations – thus, curiosity can be just as powerful a motivator as fear, but maybe even more useful to educators.
What we need to understand is the attraction that these virtual worlds might hold and why they are so compelling for many people? And thus be able to use that element as tools for education.
